Braaing my way into the Guinness World Records books
How easy is it going to be to set the record for the world’s biggest braai? Back in 2012 I attempted the Guinness World Record for the longest braai. It was the first time I attempted something like this, and with the help of some truly great partners we managed to smash the record of 28 hrs, and set the new record at a little over 62 hrs. There are some highlights from that 1st world record attempt on YouTube.
The second time I attempted a Guinness World Record was even more ambitious… we decided attempt the world record for for the longest braai by a team. The record for that was a measly 24 hours or so! While that might sound easy/easier, the rules for the team record were actually stricter than for the solo attempt. We still had to have 5 different meats on the fire at all time, but this time BOTH parties in the team had to be braaing… it wasn’t a relay!
We managed to smash that record and set a new time of 96 hrs… Check out links to the record attempt live streams.
However, the folks at Guiness World Records set VERY strict rules for recognising a new record. We had 13 cameras live streaming the entire 96hrs… which is cool. However, the organisers of that event slipped up when it came to the paperwork and finer details (2 x independent, commissioner of oaths type, people sitting there and witnessing the entire time). We had the 2 x independent witnesses there at all time… but some of them didn’t have the correct credentials, and so Guinness didn’t recognise our attempt as being official 🙁
Guinness World record for the World’s Biggest Braai – Sept 2025
My previous attempts (while monumental in my eyes) are minor when being compared to the admin and logistics of the next attempt. Big Save is attempting to organise 2, 500 South Africans to all braai at the same time. That’s 420 braai stands… 2500 aprons, tongs, boerewors, rolls etc etc … definitely gonna be a sight to behold!
Currently, the most people grilling/barbecuing simultaneously is 2,220 and was achieved by Ishigaki City (Japan) in Ishigaki, Okinawa, Japan on 18 November 2023. … but on 24 Sept, 2025 that is going to change.
I’m fortunate enough to be invited to be a part of the attempt, and now I’m inviting all of you to come and rewrite history along with us.

Step 2: Arrive at Loftus on 24 Sept, 2025 and braai. (Find us at: Loftus Versfeld D Field, located at 416 Kirkness Street, Pretoria… Gates will be open from 09h00 – braaing starts at 10h00).
That’s it! … Big Save and their partners will be taking care of all the rest.
