Why do South Africans braai so much?
We finally know why South Africans love to braai so much: It’s because early South Africans “INVENTED” the braai. I always joke that every South African child is born with a tong in their hands, but until now it was just a claim that I made. Now we finally have proof that South Africans are indeed the fire masters we all think we are.
Who discovered fire?
Scientists uncovered the earliest evidence of a camp fire, in a cave in South Africa – dating back a million years. Prior to the discovery, there wasn’t much consensus on when our ancestors mastered the art of fire. So until further evidence is uncovered, I’m claiming the invention of braaing for South Africa. 🔥🔥
“The impact of cooking food is well documented, but the impact of control over fire would have touched all elements of human society. Socializing around a camp fire might actually be an essential aspect of what makes us human.”, according to University of Toronto anthropologist Michael Chazan, co-director of the research project.

Who is the best at braaing / bbq?
To answer that question, we need to ask a few outsiders… and in most cases foreigners will tell you that nothing compares to the South African braai. Check out this post comparing the difference between a South African and English Braai.
